What we’ve learned shooting here
Where the sun drops
In La Fortuna the light disappears earlier than on the coast, especially if it rains. Ceremony at 3:00 or 3:30 — 3:30 is the absolute latest.
If it rains
Tropical rain here usually passes in about 20 minutes — and the light right after is often the best of the day. We always arrive with a plan.
Logistics worth knowing
Plan for 30-minute drives between the main photo locations (an hour round trip). A 4x4 is essential for the terrain. Coming from the coast? It is about 3.5 hours from Conchal — stay in the area the night before and start early, especially in October, the rainiest month. Wet-season sessions get muddy, and that fits the adventurous vibe perfectly.
Drone footage
Wind, rules, and permissions decide drone flights — we never promise a specific aerial shot, and we always ask the venue first.
What to avoid
Midday portraits (11 AM–2 PM) in harsh tropical light, scheduling anything in the 30 minutes before your ceremony, and a family photo list that says “and family” — name every person.

Planning a wedding at La Fortuna
What time should our ceremony start?
Earlier than the coast: 3:00 or 3:30 — no later. The terrain takes the light early, especially with rain. For elopements our #1 recommendation is early morning: fewer people at the favorite spots and better rain odds.
What if it rains?
It can rain here in any season, even full summer — we will do a non-rain dance, and we come prepared. Get two beautiful matching transparent umbrellas: they look incredible in La Fortuna rain photos.
Which hotels have the best volcano views?
Our picks: Amor Arenal (best honeymoon vibes in La Fortuna), Hotel Campo Verde (that morning view), The Springs (natural hot springs, lovely service), Los Lagos (crazy volcano viewpoint plus a lagoon), and Tabacón (a private hot-spring river).
